5 Tips to Help You Avoid Costly Car Repairs

With new cars costing almost as much as a child's college education, your goal might be to keep your old car running smoothly for as long as possible. However, you don't want to spend the money you're saving on expensive car repairs. Check out these tips to help you avoid costly car repairs!

1. Maintain Your Tires

There's more to maintaining your tires than replacing them. It’s important to check your tire pressure and add air as needed. This is especially true when the seasons change. Also, tires need to be rotated to ensure they wear evenly.

2. Change Your Oil Regularly

Clean oil removes dirt and debris from your engine as it flows through it and deposits it in your oil filter. If your oil filter is clogged or the oil is too old, your engine can become clogged.

3. Tune Up the Engine

During a tune-up of your engine, the mechanic replaces some older parts, such as spark plugs, the air filter, and the distributor cap. This time gives them a chance to assess the overall condition of your engine.

4. Take Care of Small Problems

Small repairs, such as replacing the air filter or changing the timing belt, help to ensure that you don't face big headaches in the future. A fix that costs a couple of hundred dollars now can save you thousands in the future.

5. Know Your Car

Does your car have a timing belt or a timing chain? Has it always made that noise, or is it new? When you know your car, you know when it's time to have a mechanic look at it.
